As workers have to travel greater distances in search of affordable housing, traffic congestion worsens. As housing costs increase, salaries have to keep pace. If long term plans for growth keep workforce housing in mind and make it affordable for people to live near where they work, the sprawl and congestion facing many areas elsewhere can be avoided here.

It's not too soon to act. The signs of change are already evident, as home prices in the Richmond metro region continue to rise.
